Emmanuel Goldstein is a fictional character in George Orwell's 1984. He is the principal enemy of Oceania, and is the founder and leader of an organization called The Brotherhood and writer of The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism. The Outer Party members of Oceania loudly express their hatred in the Two Minutes Hate to Goldstein and all enemies of the Party.

Appearance[]

Goldstein had a subtle Jewish face with a whitened hair, beard and mustache. In the book, he was described to have the face of a sheep.

Early Life[]

The first part of the novel stated that Goldstein was one of the main leaders of INGSOC for some time in the past (although nobody remembers exactly how long ago it was), before the events of 1984. He was almost equal to Big Brother himself in power and prestige, but then planned a counter-coup to take control of the government and overthrow Big Brother. Goldstein's coup failed and he was sentenced to death but escaped miraculously. After a certain time he formed his own teachings while in hiding.

Theories[]

  1. Emmanuel Goldstein is implied to not be a real person, having been created by Ministry of Truth to make rebels join a fake Brotherhood, or to deter others from rebelling.
  2. Emmanuel Goldstein can be one of the first revolutionaries with Big Brother during the Revolution but like Leon Trotsky of our timeline, has been thrown out of INGSOC and later executed. The Party states that he is still alive so as to distract the people from their suffering.
  3. Emmanuel Goldstein is a real person but didn't found The Brotherhood and didn't write The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism. After being expelled from the party, he moved to another country. The brotherhood and the book were created by the party as a false flag operation to detect rebels among party ranks in Ocenia. Goldstein lives in the country he moved to, unaware of anything
