Eric Arthur Blair, better known by the pseudonym George Orwell (25 June 1903 – 21 January 1950) was a British author whose works include novels, short stories, poems, essays and other non-fiction writings. he is best known for the two political novels Animal Farm: A Fairy Story and Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Orwell was born in Motihari, India, which was part of the British Empire at the time, to British parents. He was raised in England and attended Eton College. He served as a police officer in the British colony of Burma. He participated in the Spanish Civil War, fighting against both fascist and communist forces. These experiences he would eventually draw on in his books Burmese Days and Homage to Catalonia
Orwell died of tuberculosis at University College Hospital, London at the age of 46.
